When you live on an urban lot, get really clear about what’s most important to you. You can have everything, but not necessarily all at once. It takes smart planning, compromises, and a lot of work. Seek human / nature balance. Let your garden be as much for you as it is for the more-than-human beings, especially if your yard is small! 💚🐝🦋🌸

The star of this hellstrip planting is an Oregon White Oak.⁣

Why are we planting a tree near an existing great big tree, you wonder? ⁣
⁣
The big guy is an Oregon Ash, biggest I’ve seen around town, and it’s days are sadly numbered.⁣
⁣
With Emerald Ash Borer’s arrival in Oregon, one of the best strategies we can employ is to preemptively plant new, resilient trees now. ⁣
⁣
I chose Oregon White Oak (𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘢) because it’s disease free, resilient to a warming climate, and a keystone species feeding a wide range of insects and birds. ⁣

While the front garden, hellstrip, and sanctuary get planted, the backyard gets its finishing prep. A buried layer of gravel required the excavation expertise of our old friend Andrew. I love that he came wearing his vintage Whole Gardens shirt and hat!⁣
