⁣ When there’s a lot of existing features in y ⁣
When there’s a lot of existing features in your yard, I like to design the layout with simplicity and immersive experience in mind.⁣
⁣
For John and Leila, that means allowing the existing spiral bed to stand on its own and balancing it with a broader planting around a new destination patio. No need to complicate things with more swoops and swirls. Let’s just create an experience of walking under a rose arbor, past a bloomy meadow and tasty raspberries, to discover a hidden patio under the solar array. Sheathing the posts and underside of the solar array with cedar will transform it into a gazebo of sorts. ⁣
⁣
This is the preliminary design, ready for refinements and plant communities!⁣

There’s nothing alive in thick bark mulch on top of landscape cloth.

Which I guess was the intention of whoever put it down.⁣
⁣
You can have low maintenance and life, though. ⁣
⁣
It starts with getting all that bark and cloth out of there.⁣
⁣
Nice work Aaron and Freedom! ⁣

Can’t wait to plant next week. This little blooming ‘Myrtle Wolf’ manzantia will be center stage!⁣

This one was dry, parched, even in the heart of our rainy, rainy rain season.⁣
⁣
Facing the heat of the west, with mats of repellent roots, the old classics—lawn, rhodies, dogwood—don’t suit.⁣
⁣
And so, today, Aaron and Freedom got out there to cut sod, to remove the thirsty, to clear and prepare. ⁣
⁣
I always say a gardener must know how to kill a plant as much as how to care for one.⁣
⁣
Having a plan of what comes next is key though, before you get too whack happy.⁣
⁣
This is the birth of the Mini Oregon Garden. ⁣
⁣
Yes, it is small and will be full of drought tolerant natives, but, also, Alice drives the cutest Mini and loves this place we call home. ⁣
⁣
May her new garden reflect her loves and her dry site!⁣

You know you’re a pollinator nerd when…⁣
⁣
of all the cultural riches of San Miguel de Allende, it’s the Jardín para los Polinizadores that’s your favorite:⁣
⁣
giant black bumblebees hang from pendant coral tubes of flowering agave,⁣
⁣
monarch butterflies dance overhead, evading my iPhone but capturing my awe,⁣
⁣
smaller butterflies alight on lantana and lavender,⁣
⁣
and, delight of delights, 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘰 (𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘮 𝘮𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢), the mint-scented relative of Oregon native yerba buena (𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘪), dresses in festive orange funnels!⁣
⁣
This pollinator garden is tucked amongst the lush trees in Parque Juarez not far from el centro in San Miguel.⁣
⁣
I could stay here for hours.⁣
⁣
But, now, I must return home where winter cold reigns and these lively things slumber on til spring.⁣
