Phases of a Garden Retreat
August 19, 2015
Back in 2010 we installed half of our design for a very special garden retreat in the hills outside Eugene. The garden is detached from the house in a sunny clearing in the woods. The first phase included a hardy kiwi entry pergola, a flagstone dining patio topped with a custom grape arbor, and basalt retaining walls and edging framing beds of butterfly attracting plantings and fruit trees.
Combining a geometric layout of the paths and beds with lush meadow-like plantings resulted in a beautifully balanced outdoor space for the homeowners to enjoy. We included purple flowering gayfeather (Liatris ‘Kobold’) and Autumn Moor grass (Sesleria autumnalis) under young apple, pear and persimmon trees.
More recently, the homeowners had a spectacular art studio built in the remaining half of the garden space. This past Fall, we installed stone retaining walls, edging, stairs, a flagstone landing at the studio entrance and a small boulder fountain to complement the studio and first phase of the garden. We look forward to planting in these new beds this spring. This project is a great example of how a well-planned design can be implemented over time to fit a budget and reach toward a dream of a personal garden sanctuary.
We are honored for the opportunity to continue our relationship with these homeowners and this site. Thank you!
Thank you for the great article
