I wish I knew about Douglas meadow foam (Limananthes dougalsii) years ago. The way it buzzes with so many insects is one of my favorite traits for a plant to have. I'm not sure who this fancy-butted bee is in the first photo, but she wasn't alone. Here in the Living Green Garden, where we seeded a northwest native meadow mix last fall, the meadowfoam is a carpet of bloom knitting the ground and busy with pollinators. Rosy plectritis (Plectritis congesta) and globe gilia (Gilia capitata) are also in bloom now. Slower growing perennial components of the mix welcome the protective spreading stems of meadowfoam; suppressing weeds, retaining moisture, deterring deer (we hope) all while adding abundant "floral resource" as the scientists call it. Color and buzz, a sea of bloom.⁠⁠

I sewed little patches of Douglas meadowfoam with its known companion Douglas iris (David Douglas was in the neighborhood when names were assigned) in the inner garden in the Fall of 2019. I'm so happy to see the lovely amount of self seeding that happened around the iris, the stepping stones, and straying just the right amount into the planting to naturalize the drifts of bloom. A perfect self-seeding annual for the habitat garden!⁠⁠
