Erik paces when he talks on the phone. I came by yesterday to plant one more manzanita as he was making good use of his new garden for ambling conversation. It made me happy to see. That, and all the new growth and blooms!⁣

The fleur de lawn is lush and lovely; ⁣

blanket flower, Oregon sunshine, hummingbird mint and lavender color the terraced bed; ⁣
⁣
lanceleaf self heal (which Tammy calls “self care” 💜) is chubby with bloom;⁣
⁣
and Catalpa petals confetti the verge garden.⁣

Plenty to admire as you walk and talk to loved ones far away.⁣

I love this guy!⁣

For so, so many reasons. ⁣

The big one today is that he works so hard and with such attention to all the details. All the unknowable factors that arise when renovating a garden require more creativity, care, and muscle than you can imagine.⁣
⁣
Yesterday, he wielded a 70 pound sledgehammer to remove an old, nonfunctional, concrete lily pool.⁣
⁣
Today, he suggested a smart shift for the new boulder fountain when a big root from the persimmon tree was found in the way of my designed spot.⁣

The super drought tolerant side hasn’t had a chance to demonstrate its resilience through this exceptionally wet spring, but it’s rolling with the rains and promising more to come.⁣
⁣
Here the Oregon sunshine grows more upright, looking at home amidst three excellent grasses: Roemer’s fescue, prairie June grass, and blue oat grass. The wind adores this combo, perpetually playing, dancing the flowers, an interpretive nod to oak savanna.⁣
⁣
So young this planting! Self-seeding annuals like Madia elegans, Clarkia amoena, and Limnanthes douglasii, as well as tiny perennial narrow leaf milkweed and white sage brush will color the ground in time. ⁣
⁣
Overhead, an Oregon white oak reigns. Manzanita, Julia Phelps ceanothus, and buckbrush ceanothus anchor the meadow with soon-to-develop structure or “bones” to contrast with the dynamic meadow.⁣
⁣
This will be a fun one to watch over time!⁣ Thanks to Janet for taking such good care of it through its establishment!

I was just going to tell you about Oregon Sunshine and how it wins hands down for the most visitors, the most hovering, pollinating, winged diners. And it’s true, this is an excellent plant, the one native flower I recommend most. That and yarrow. ⁣
⁣
But then I realized there’s a lot more going on in this garden that I want to show you. It might take two posts!⁣
⁣
The Garden of Native Renewal was, just last Fall, a place overrun with all the invasive species you can think of.⁣
⁣
Now take a peak: the hellstrip along the path to the front door is over the top successful. I love it! So. Much. Better. than Nandina!⁣
⁣
Around the bench and birdbath, Janet and I planted new camas, the 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 camas (𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘪 𝘴𝘴𝘱. 𝘴𝘶𝘬𝘴𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘧𝘪𝘪), after death camas (𝘛𝘰𝘹𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘮) was mistakenly (oops) planted from an otherwise trustworthy grower. ⁣
⁣
But the best part is hearing how much the garden means to Janet. That’s what really gets me. The most beautiful thing is that relationship - gardener to garden. It’s an endlessly reciprocal partnership. Puttering outdoors, I still maintain, is the best therapy.⁣ And it makes for the most vibrant garden.
