With the cool name of Elk Clover, it’s a mystery this native isn’t more popular in nurseries or gardens.⁣
⁣
Elks are pure majesty. And, clover is sweet. Though this is not a true clover. It just has big ass compound leaves. Thus, Elk Clover.⁣
⁣
My young plant along the path back to my office has been beautifully distracting for months now.⁣
⁣
Right now, it’s the rosy color of its ripening fruit that I adore.⁣
⁣
But first there was the unfurling of those grand leaves.⁣
⁣
Then the white flowers and all their pollinating visitors.⁣
⁣
On the horizon, I anticipate glossy black berries and, hopefully a tiny flurry of winged feasters.⁣
⁣
Also known as 𝘈𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢 and California spikenard, this plant grows in wet floodplains as well as road side ditches in the wild. ⁣
⁣
In the garden, it seems super adaptable. ⁣
⁣
Give it a dapple or more of shade and an occasional drink and you too could bask in the spectacle of Elk Clover.⁣

I can’t stop hearing the Cascara tree. The one I met at the top of Cascara Lane in Philomath earlier this month.⁣
⁣
Just before I went in for ACL surgery, I spent a week at an Air BnB working, surrounded by wild trees, a pond garden, and young, spotted deer.⁣
⁣
It was a peaceful place. But, in the liveliest sense of peace. Everything crackled with awareness, rustled with foraging, gleamed in August’s sunlight.⁣
⁣
When Aaron came to join me on the last night, I took him to meet the Cascara tree. She stands at the bottom of the slope, beside the pond garden, before the Oregon White Oaks and Douglas Firs tower.⁣
⁣
“Look at her rounded crown, and her bark speckled white like an Alder’s. Here’s her berries, just ripening now,” I showed Aaron. We’ve been considering planting a new tree in our back garden to shade his art studio from the hot afternoon sun. This could be the one.⁣
⁣
“It’s not the showiest tree,” I conceded, “Unless you consider all the birds that are attracted to it’s berries—they’re quite a show!”⁣
